What an honour to be a part of Vicki and Mitch very special wedding day. Instead of a photographer, I was there second shooting video for Jordon Hon. The main photographer was the very talented Sharon Litchfield.

While I was packing for the wedding day shoot, I was choosing a film camera to take with, I went with my trusty Minolta Maxxum 7000. Then it time for film... opened my fridge to look at my film stock, and came across a president choice 400/24 film. hmmm okay, where was it that I got this film???? Oh picked it up for 25 cents at a garage sale, right.... expiration date: March 2004. Great... this is it. I will shoot with this film today (What was I thinking?). And it was so awesome. I love the faded black, the faded colour, the super grainy results, and most of all, having Vicki and Mitch on the film.

I was lucky enough to be able to sneak 24 shots in between shooting videos. Thank you Jordon, and Sharon, for letting me be a bit selfish and take some photos. Thank you Sharon for letting me take some of your idea. I hope you all like these memories captured in a roll of film that expired 12 years ago....as much as I do.

Cheers!

Ply

Another film adventure blog for this summer....with Mamiya DSX1000, introduced in 1974. I love this camera!!! When I first got this camera, I am not sure what to do.... especially with the use of in camera light meter. After watching couple of youtube videos, buying new batteries, I am ready.... not really. Upon further inspection of the camera, the damper was disintegrating which could cause mirror to break when it flick up, or could cause light leak. I end up spending a bit of time trying to replace a DIY mirror damper.  The DSX1000 is very similar to the very popular MSX500/1000. Except that the DSX1000 has a dual light meter, average and spot, where as the M version only has average metering. Number 500 and 1000 represent maximum shutter speed of 1/500s and 1/1000s, respectively. The Mamiya DSX is a successor of the vastly popular Mamiya DTL.... although the DSX wasn't as popular :(.

This blog is the first roll of film I try out with this camera, and to test possible light leak. I end up taking this camera around to a few places in the span of 2 months to finish my roll of fuji 200/24 films. Here are some of my adventure/street photography captured with the lovely DSX1000.

Going back to January 1985, Minolta released the game changing Maxxum 7000 AF camera. With this camera, came the pioneer of the autofocus (AF) system that laid ground for much better AF in later SLRs and digital cameras today. In 1986, this camera would have cost about 325 USD, that is about 700 USD after inflation. Nowadays you can find this bad boys on Ebay for about 10-30 bucks, crazy. I got this off kijiji for 20 bucks, with a 28-85 F3.5-5.6 lens, and came with 5 expired films. Two of which are Kodak Black and White 400CN of unknown expired date, and unknown storage condition... which were use in the Maxxum 7000 over 3 weeks, and here are the some of the photos I took from landscape photography to even engagement portraits. I hope you enjoy the photos taken by this piece of photography history. - Ply

What an adventure I had with G and J during their prewedding adventure session! The day started with a roller coaster of a weather, as thunder storm rolled over Elk Island National Park, delaying our adventure for about an hour. Then the sky starting to clear creating cloudy sky, and sun shine landscape, it was magical (except for the mosquitoes). We were at Bison loop, Tawayik Lake, Astotin Lake, and back to Bison loop again for some great bison photo bombing. There were lots of lovely moment from just walking into the sunset holding hands, hugging in the field, and just staring at the stunning landscape of the park. I am just so happy for G and J. Congratulation and enjoy every moment of your wedding week! -  Ply

I had a great opportunity to help out good photographer friend of mine, Pam (check out her website at http://www.pamkriangkum.com/), with a bridal portrait shoot. Not only I get to help with the shoot, but I was also allow to bring my camera as well! We have booked out 2 hours of at the Rutherford house. Our model is Kristen, Dress: The Bridal Boutique, Flowers: Virginia Rose Events, Makeup: Renee Weisberg, and Hair: Katie Hale. It was a fun and challenging shoot. The light was the biggest factor as we did not want to use any flash and rely only on natural light. Here are some of my favourite from the shoot. Hope you like them :).

Farhaan and Christine rounding off their engagement/wedding ceremony with a super fun and loving Henna Party and a small Indian wedding ceremony. They will be going for their destination wedding ... this weekend! Congratulation! This si the last part of the 3 blogs series.

We start off with the day before the ceremony with Henna Party at Farhaan's parent's apartment. Nothing extravagant but full of fun! Friends and family were invited to come in wave to get their henna done, and have pizza (YES!). Everyone had fun picking out and designing their henna, including the boys :).

We start off the next day at Christine's Auntie's house, where the girls are getting ready. I did not know that sari can be so complicate in putting on, and how heavy it was, yet the girls did a wonderful job with them. The ceremony started with a private ceremony that only the bride, groom, and their parents/grandparents were allow to attend. Then the couple, along with the wedding party walked down the aisle between their guests. After some beautiful words and prayers, the ceremony ended with cake cutting and family greeting. We then took the wedding party for a super quick formal photography fun around the centre ground. I wish Farhaan and Christine the best in all their future adventure.

Farhaan and Christine - Part 2 http://www.plyphotography.ca/blog/2015/10/farhaan-and-christine---part-2 20150728 F and C Day 2 Blog - 01120150728 F and C Day 2 Blog - 011

Just a simple, yet beautiful, paper signing ceremony at the Chinese Garden for Farhaan and Christine. Since their actual wedding will be a destination wedding, they decided to do a small paper signing ceremony here in Edmonton, with just the minister, and their close friends as witness. The day was gorgeous! Beautiful blue sky and a little breezy summer day. We were just beside the pagoda, which unfortunately was under renovation. The ceremony was full of loving words and big smiles. After the quick paper signing, we went to for a quick and fun "wedding formal" along the river valley. Their silliness and love for each other always bring smiles to me, and hopefully, to you too. Last part to come soon :)

Farhaan and Christine - Part 1 http://www.plyphotography.ca/blog/2015/10/farhaan-and-christine---part-1 20150725 F and C Day 1 Blog - 07120150725 F and C Day 1 Blog - 071

It was an honour to be part of such a beautiful Vietnamese tea ceremony. Farhaan and Christine will have their destination wedding later in the year, but they are doing the tea ceremony, an Indian ceremony, and the signing of paper here in Edmonton. This is the part 1 of a 3 parts series. This part feature the Vietnamese Tea Ceremony (including the door crasher game), and a formal with traditional Vietnamese dress. The whole event was so colourful, and man there were lots of food. We were well fed :). The day started with great weather, warm and sunny, which is great for the door crasher games. Then the group moved inside Christine parents house (as per tradition) for the tea ceremony. The ceremony were full of great smiles and great emotions, which made it so much more special. The cloud and rain then rolled in right in time for the afternoon photo session, which made for a great umbrella photo ops :P. What can I say, rain on the 'wedding' day is a sign of good luck... just like how lucky Farhaan and Christine is to be part of each other lives.

Please enjoy the photos. - Ply

What a great fall morning with the Arnold family! We went for a photo walk at the Muttagart Sanctuary along the White Mud Creek a few weeks ago. It was such a fun photo shoot with a very loving family! Little Cameron was so much fun (although not the best with "Hey Cameron this way *waving hand above camera* this way! Hi!" *snap away!), he would often looks for rocks so that he could throw it in the water. I hope that his smile in these photos will be as contagious as it was in real life :).

Hayden Cake Smash! http://www.plyphotography.ca/blog/2015/9/hayden-cake-smash 20150901 S Hayden -120150901 S Hayden -1

I had so much fun taking photos of Hayden during her first birthday cake smash event. While I was testing the lighting, taking a few candid shot of her, she gave me a "one" with her index finger, almost like she is telling me she is one years old :). With cake smash event, you have no idea how the baby is going to react to the cake. I have been to a few that the baby absolutely had no interest in the cake. Hayden started slow, not knowing what to do. Once she has has taste some sweet icing, she start having some interested but still need a bit of help from mommy and daddy. We end on the high note when she buried her face in the cake. Her facial expression is just priceless. Happy first birthday Hayden!

What a night to remember for G & J! I can't say much for this beautiful engagement reception except that it was colourful, joyful, and just plain wonderful. The engagement indulge in tradition from start to finished which mean.... eat - ceremony - eat - dance and more dance. It was an honour to be the photographer for this event, and it is the first for me to be taking photos for such event. Thank you both for choosing me as your photographer. Congratulation for both of you on your engagement. Here are a few sneak peak from the fun and loving party.

Daneau Family 2015 Sneak Peak http://www.plyphotography.ca/blog/2015/6/daneau-family-2015-sneak-peak

Quick post! A sneak peak on the recent mini family session recently with a fun and loving family. We went for a shot walk just behind the city of St.Albert city hall where there are couple of cool bridges and nature area. It was my first time shooting in St.Albert, and I would definitely want to do more shoot out there. I should explore more area around Edmonton.

Enjoy!

Canadian Rockies http://www.plyphotography.ca/blog/2014/10/canadian-rockies This post is a work in progress.

Hi people....

So lately I have been getting requests from many of my Thai friends to tell them about places that they should visit when they go to Banff National Park, or Jasper national park. So I decided to do a blog post about places that I really like in the Canadian ROCKIES!!!  Unfortunately there will not be much about Jasper National Park because I don't know it well enough. Most of this blog will be about Banff National Park, Yoho National Park, Golden, and Mount Revelstoke National Park, hot spring tour, and Kananaskis Country. This is not a comprehensive guide, I probably miss tons of stuff and most of these places are not very well known among foreigners.

I will not be writing too much into winter sports (eg. Sunshine Ski resort or Lake Louise), but if you beginners decided to go skiing/snowboarding in the Rockies, I recommended you to take a lesson or two at your local hill before going so that you could enjoy the mountain a bit more.

Let start with A MAP! Here you will see some of the locations that I have been, and some of them are linked with my photos as well. Click on the location bubble in the map to find out more about each place!

Please feel free to leave a comment (let me know where to visit too!). Note that this is a live blog and a live map. I may add content at anytime! Also many of these photos are from when I just start shooting... I feel like some of the photos are not as good as I would have like them to be. Also, enjoy the photos!

So many beautiful scenery, amazing wild life, and routes to take!!!!

I guess since I live in Edmonton, I'll start there. There are pretty much 3 ways you could drive to the Rockies from Edmonton, you could take the yellowhead highway to Jasper, drive down highway 2 to Red Deer --> Rocky Mountain House --> Highway 11 to Columbia ice field parkway (Highway 93), or drive down to Calgary --> Canmore --> Banff. I have not drive the ice field parkway myself (I really should sometime). I also should go to Jasper more often.... Sad

Anyway! From Calgary there are many places that you could visit within an hour drive (so jealous) like Canmore, Banff National Park, and Kananaskis County. Within a few hour drives you can go to Kootney National park, Yoho National Park, Mount Revelstoke National Park, and Gracier National Park, all of which are great to visit.

These are some of the places I have been, and things I have done.

Banff National Park

From Calgary to Banff National Park - Highway 1 or Highway 1A - both routes have great scenery. If you decided to go via highway 1A you will pass by Cochrane. You could do a quick stop at Mackay's Cochrane ice cream shop for great summer treat. Highway 1A will join with highway 1 in Canmore before you enter Banff National Park. I have seen many wildlife on highway 1A compare to highway 1.

Photos: Highway 1A scenery and a herd mountain sheep.

Highway 1A!Scenery from Highway 1A Mountain Sheep along highway 1A

What to do around Town of Banff?

Visit Bow Falls, go ice skate behind Fairmont hotel (see map), eat good Japanese food (especially Banff Sushi House AKA Sushi Train) , visit moo ice cream shop, warm up at the hot spring, and take a walk along Bow Avenue. Apart from this there are so much more to do in Banff! Go Go snowboarding at Sunshine (Not my prefer place but ok), visit the historical Banff hot spring museum, take a romantic walk along Banff avenue at night, visit Lake Minnewanka, and look for a nice place to hike around Banff.  Sorry I actually don't have many good photos around the town of Banff.

There was this one time that I got to see a bear cub up close as in it walked right by my car. I also had a chance to spend Canada Day in Banff and get to see the spectacular fireworks in the heart of the Rockies. I love Banff Sushi House, it's a small restaurant that seat only about 20 people, but the quality of food here is very good. The main attraction of Banff Sushi House is that its a conveyor belt style, but with toy train that runs around on the track carrying sushi as its cargo.

Photos: Bear cub, Banff Sushi House, and Maguro sushi!!!

(For those of you who don't know why some people call Banff a 'Japanese town', you should read up on the history of Japanese people in the Canadian Rockies.).

Johnston Canyon
Short Hike, Long Hike, Epic View
This Place Got It All

(I just made a Haiku...) If you have a chance you should also visit Johnston Canyon for a nice hike/walk. You get to walk right in the canyon too! If you hike further you will reach the ink pots, and a 360 view of the mountain. This is a great place for a picnic before hiking back.

Photos: Ink Pots, upper Johnston fall, and the Johnston Canyon trail

Moraine Lake and Lake Louise

Both of these lakes are very nice. Lake Louise can be access all year round, while Moraine Lake road opens late spring to mid October. There are hiking trails all around both two lakes. There is also Lake Louise ski resort, which I preferred over Sunshine. It always a stunning view of Lake Louise from the top of the mountain. Also... chipmunks everywhere.

Photos: Moraine Lake, and Tiny McFatty by the Lake

Yoho National Park

From Lake Louise, continue west (on the way to Golden/Kicking Horse) on Trans Canada Highway (1) to Field, BC. Here there is this really awesome lake.... Emerald Lake. This is one of my most favourite lake in the Rockies. The colour of this lake is absolutely stunning, all year around. If it is sunny then I highly recommend going for a canoe around the lake. You won't be disappoint. There are many hiking trails as well as walk way around the lake. There is also Emerald lake lodge if you want to stay over night, as well as a restaurant. Close by, there is a natural bridge that is quite neat to visit.

Photos: Grey Emerald, Canoe on the lake, Emerald Lake Lodge, Canoe in the Sunny Emerald, Emerald Dream Walk, walking trail beside the lake, and the Natural Bridge

Golden, BC

Known for Kicking Horse Mountain Resort and white water rafting, golden is definitely an amazing place to visit whether you are looking to do winter sport or just want to do a road trip.

Summer in Golden - Do go up the Kicking horse mountain and hike along the mountain ridge (I have done this during summer, and during winter, with my snowboard ofcourse). The view here is just breath taking. There is also a grizzly bear refuge (BOO). There are other activity here as well like zipline and water rafting.

Winter in Golden - Hit up the slope at Kicking Horse Mountain. Party it up?

Photos: Boo the Grizzly, Kicking Horse Mountain Ridge, and Handsome Dude on the Ridge

Revelstoke and Mount Revelstoke National Park

Highly recommended if you are driving to Vancouver, or just bored of Banff/Lake Louise. Revelstoke National Park is something else.  Not too far from Golden, continue west on Highway 1 you will arrive at Revelstoke. On the way here I also stop by the Giant Cedars Nature Trail. For those of you who love big trees this is pit stop is a must. Short but great nature walk among some giant cedars. In Revelsoke, you can stay the the party town, Revelstoke. The town official motto is 'work hard, play hard'. Yea.....

Here you can drive to almost the peak of Mount Revelstoke during summer. Here you will see many different view, including mountain ranges as far as your eyes can see, and the meadow and ponds near the summit will leave you in awe. If you decided to go during winter, make sure to hit the slope at Revelstoke Mountain Resort for some awesome powders and deep steep bowl.

Photos: From Golden, Giant Cedars Nature Trail, pond at the summit, summit meadow, and mount Revelstoke view

Hot Spring Tour - Arrow Lakes

From Revelstoke, drive south on highway 23 you will find yourself in the middle of nowhere... I mean the amazing Upper Arrow Lake. This lake got some amazing history, and there is actually a town underneath the water! Highway 23 connecting Revelstoke to Nakusp is very unique in a way, as it got a two ferries as part of the highway system. These are free ferry that you can take from one side of Arrow Lake to the other. The ferry connecting Revelstoke is called Upper Arrow Lake Ferry (also check out BC's other inland ferry). The view from the tiny ferry is seriously out of this world. Once you cross the lake, there are two main hot springs locations, Halcyon and Nakusp. Both of these location have resort style (think swimming pool), and also many local natural hot springs spots, many of these will require you to hike into the mountain (I have yet to do this).

From there you can take the ferry back or you can drive south (Will take couple of days to do a hot spring loop, take about 9 hours of driving time, see map and check ferry schedule) to Nelson, BC, and visit the close by Ainsworth Hot Spring. From there you could do a loop south to Creston via highway 3A, then north to Cranbrook via highway 95 to Fairmont hot spring, and Radium hot spring (Kootney National Park). From there you could drive back to Banff National park.

Photos: View from upper arrow lake ferry, Halcyon hot spring, upper arrow lake ferry on the way back during sunset, and radium hot spring (Kooteney National Park).

Kananaskis Country Provincial Park System

GO EXPLORE THE FOOTHILLS (See map)! There are more to the Rockies than our national parks. Kananaskis Country is one of the best place you could visit within an hour drive from Calgary. Kananaskis country in a park system consisted of several provincial park (no entrance fee). Situate here are the beautiful Kananaskis golf course (which was sadly destroyed during the flood a few years ago, but it is in a rebuilding period), Nakiska ski resort, and several beautiful lakes such as spray lake (spray lake provincial park), and the upper and lower Kananaskis lake (Peter Lougheed provincial park).

The most common route (see map) is to take a detour route from highway 1, go south on highway 40 (passing Nakiska and the golf course), then join with the Kananaskis lakes trail. Here you can go south to visit the Lower and Upper Kananaskis Lakes, and then drive back up north on Smith-Derrien Trail to Canmore, with an option to visit many places along the way such as mount Shark and Spray Lake.

Photos: Canmore View Point, Lower Kananaskis Lake x2, Mountain Sheep on Highway 40, Spray Lake, and Lower Kananaskis Lake

Extra Photos: unknown water fall, along highway 1, and an Elk in Jasper

Please leave me any comment if you have any questions!

Off to Seattle (read Redmond) to visit my mom and my sister. I didn't get to shoot much but it was fun to spend time with the family. Mom was excite to see me, and my sister was busy with work but she did spend sometime with me as well. Other than the usual family stuff, mom and I got to go shopping a the outlet in Tulalip. Of course I bought myself couple of pairs of converses :D. We also went for a nice dinner at Din Tai Fung in Bellvue. mmmm juicy pork dumplings...

Other than that mom and I just hung out around Redmond. We found this hippie place called SoulFood cafe, which serves super awesome coffee by roasted by Caffe Lusso (http://www.caffelusso.com/)only a few minutes drive away. So I got my mom to tag along with me to go to this small local roaster. We could smell coffee right when we get off the car. We were greet by Shawn and Phillip Meech. Phlip is the founder and roastmaster at Caffe Lusso. They were very nice and let me take photos of the roasters as well as brew some espresso for me to try. I got their Gutemala and Brazillian coffee, which was roasted just couple of hours before we got there. This was my first time visiting a coffee roaster, and I had a great time. (Plus I got to bring back some amazing coffee beans for me to enjoy in Canada)

Didn't have such great time on the way back, as my flight out of Seattle was delayed. Which made me missed my flight from Vancouver to Edmonton. I was sent downtown Vancouver to spend a night there. Edmonton was colder than when I left. Sad.

It was a Beautiful Night http://www.plyphotography.ca/blog/2014/8/its-a-beautiful-night August 10th 2014 - Today forecast called for supermoon. As a few friends and I ventured out into the wild... Elk Island national park. Clumsy me forgot to gas up earlier, which made us missed the moon rise by about 10 or so minutes. Disappointed, really, as the sun was setting the clouds turned blood red and that would have been a perfect time to shoot. Being me, google map location scouted the night before and tried to go to the west side of Astotin Lake, ofcourse I couldn't find the turn off.... so we went to the main beach.

We got out of the car and I grabbed my camera and start shooting right away, while my friends was shooting.... themselves with mosquito spray. So I was able to get the photo of the moon while it was still yellow. As we turned around, the sun was still setting, and the colour of the sky is absolutely stunning. The array of  red to blue with beautiful pattern of cloud reflecting off the lake created an amazing view. We quickly walk toward the lakes with all of our gear and try to capture the moment the best we could.

The sun finally left us, taking the cloud with it, only a big bright moon was left. The moon was so bright we can clearly see our shadow. So we stood there, stargazing and taking photos of the dark bright sky. Sadly, I couldn't capture the milky way. So we headed back to YEG, but not before being stuck in traffic at 1 am, as herds and herds of bison occupied the exit route.

It was a beautiful night.

C & R Engagement, Highlight of Edmonton http://www.plyphotography.ca/blog/2014/8/c-r-edmonton-engagement Several weeks ago, I ventured out to the heart of Edmonton and did an engagement photos for C & R. They are both so awesome and we took many great photos that highlight the lovely couple and Edmonton. The spectacular view of downtown Edmonton is just awesome. The sky was overcast but that gave us a great cloud effect. The style of the shoot is a bit different than what I used to, C & R wanted the photos to be a bit 'darker', and not too bright (read over exposed). Overall, I am very happy with the photos, and so are C & R. I hope you enjoy the photos as much as I do as well. Cheers to the awesome and fantastic couple.

Mr.Seal in Victoria Harbour http://www.plyphotography.ca/blog/2014/4/mr-seal-in-victoria-harbour If you are ever in Victoria, BC, Canada, then you should drop by fisherman wharf. There is a great fish and chip place, as well as a seafood shop. If you are lucky then you might get to see couple of seals. They usually hang out just outside the seafood shop hoping that a walk by patrons will buy them a plate of fish :P.

Fall in Edmonton http://www.plyphotography.ca/blog/2012/9/fall-in-edmonton I went over to the park on the north side of the high level bridge to take this picture. I blurred out the top and bottom of the image, and sharpen the centre, which make the train stand out.
